In Celebration of Pumpkins

Pumpkin Fever

I love pumpkins. Love them. I get so excited when the pumpkin bins start appearing in grocery stores. I know they’ll soon be filled with rich round pumpkins that shout fall and bring on cooler weather. On your front porch, in your tummy, on your face, or in your home — pumpkins are simply good for you.

Pumpkin Power

Let’s think about pumpkins. All summer they lie around in a field, soaking up the sun. They’re connected by vines to other pumpkins and roots that take nutrients and water out of the soil and send it along. Although they don’t look like they’re doing much, these pumpkins are growing and transforming those nutrients, water, and sunshine into powerful antioxidants, vitamins, enzymes, and minerals and storing them in the pulp, leaves and seeds. All of this translates into good news for our bodies and our skin.

The pumpkins’ bright orange colors indicate foods that are rich in beta carotene, an antioxidant that has anti-aging properties and fights free radicals. Plus, pumpkins have substantial amounts of vitamins A and C, folic acid, the amino acid tryptophan, and natural enzymes. For your body, this translates into better eye, prostate, and heart health; support for those with rheumatism; even a better mood from the serotonin-producing tryptophan that helps us relax and unwind.

Now for the skin. Let’s take pumpkin pulp and put it on our faces. All of the nutrients you ingested are now sitting right on your skin. The vitamin C is brightening your skin, the beta-carotene is protecting your skin from UV exposure and pollutants. Plus, that pumpkin pulp contains enzymes — a known exfoliate that translates into polished skin. This should give you reason to celebrate pumpkins!

So ponder this one. Enzymes leave our skin extra-sensitive to the sun, right? Well, pumpkins also have the beta carotene that protects skin from ultraviolet rays. As often happens in nature, an issue created by one component of the fruit or plant is corrected and compensated for by another component. Nature is truly balanced.

Pumpkin Pie! Oh My!

This recipe is from Little Rock Cooks  published in 1972 by the Junior League of Little Rock. I haven’t cooked all of the 880 recipes, but almost. This one for pumpkin pie is one of my favorites!

Oven: 450° and 350°

Servings: 8

Crust
This recipe calls for using a 10″ unbaked pie crust and adding the following:
3 tbs. butter
1/3 cup brown sugar

1/3 cup pecans chopped

Cream butter and sugar; add pecans. Press on top of prepared pie crust. Bake for 10 minutes at 450°. Cool. Reduce oven to 350° for later use.

Pie Fillings

1 cup evaporated milk
½ cup water
3 eggs
1½  cups canned pumpkin (organic)
½ cup sugar
½ cup brown sugar
¼ tsp. salt
1½ tsp. cinnamon
½ tsp. ginger
¼ tsp. nutmeg
¼ tsp. cloves
Whipped cream – sweetened (I add a teaspoon or slightly more of powdered sugar when I’m whipping the cream)

Honey (not included in original recipe)

Scald milk with water in a small pan. Beat eggs in a large bowl. Stir in pumpkin, sugar, brown sugar, salt and spices. Beat in milk mixture. Pour into prepared pie crust. Bake at350° for 50 minutes or until set but soft.

Serve with a dollop of whipped cream with a drizzle of honey on top (a long-standing family tradition).

Pumpkin on Your Face

Now we’re going to take the recipe above, slice and dice it a bit, and create three skin care recipes using the exact same ingredients. For each recipe, mix ingredients, use as recommended, and store the remainder for up to a week in your refrigerator. I always use organic products for skin care products whenever possible.

Powerful Pumpkin Mask

This mask will leave your skin soft and glowing. Use on face, hands, and feet. Do not use on sensitive décolleté. This should leave your skin feeling warm, clean and nourished.

½ cup organic canned pumpkin
¼ tsp. ground ginger (antioxidant/anti-aging; toning, cleansing, antiseptic)
Pinch of ground nutmeg (optional — use for acne)
Pinch of ground cloves (antiseptic and reduces inflammation)
1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon (strong antibacterial and anti fungal properties; exfoliant)
1 tb whipping cream (or half and half)
2 drops geranium essential oil (optional — wonderful for skin)

Honey

Pumpkin Salt/Sugar Scrub

This scrub is for the body, not the face — the salt and sugar are too rough. Use at the end of the shower after washing then just rinse off — the oil will leave you feeling smooth all day.

½ cup organic canned pumpkin
2 tbs brown or granulated sugar (if it is too scratchy, give it a whizz or two in the food processor or coffee grinder)
1 tb salt
3 tbs oil (olive? Coconut? Your choice.)

1 drop clove oil (optional)

Pumpkin/Egg Mask
This mask will help remove impurities in your skin abut still leave a smooth silky feel. Use on your face and hands.
2 tablespoons organic canned pumpkin
1 egg white

1 tsp honey

A Well-crafted Pumpkin

Every year I bring home many pumpkins — large and small — where they grace tables, sideboards and front steps through November (okay, maybe sometime after January). My favorite is the Musque de Provenance or Fairytale pumpkin. I’m sure that with the wave of a wand this pumpkin could spirit a princess off  to a ball after sprouting wheels, a driver’s seat and hitch for horses.

This year I added a bit of sparkle to my pumpkins. Mixing glitter with Martha Stewart Crafts Gilttering Glue and a bit of water, I brushed this mixture over the the pumpkins’ “shoulders.” It made for a super sheen and it was super easy. That’s it. I love them just the way they are.

The Products

As you might imagine, pumpkin products abound! Here are three of my favorites:

Perfect Pumpkin Enzyme Polish, $58, 3.8 oz., June Jacobs

I purchased this at one of the spa shows, just to give it a try. I am out now — having used it several times a week — and am going to order another tube. The smell is wonderful (I suppose you really shouldn’t eat your face scrub), the size of the granules are perfect, and it leaves your skin feeling smooth and healthy. Highly recommended.

Splendid Dirt, Nutrient Rich Mud Mask, $25, 3.25 oz. FarmHouse Fresh

I’m on my second jar of this mis-named mud mask. The base for this tingly, warming mask is organic pumpkin puree. Now I have to admit, my face is a bit red when I take it off, but it goes away quickly and I always feel like my skin looks clearer and brighter after use.

Pumpkin Chai Soy Candle, $12, 8 oz. Farmhouse Candles

This candle makes my house smell the way my front door looks — filled with pumpkins. It makes me simply sigh with the richness of it. You can often find this brand at Home Goods.

Simply enjoy your pumpkins this year. Hug them, pet them, let them make you smile! For a visual celebration of pumpkins visit the “In Celebration of Pumpkins” board on Pinterest.

Wise Old Saying (or I’m just saying…)

iSPA’s Conference was Amazing!

There are so many cool things out there…

Trends, changing markets, new products, cutting edge techniques and procedures — the spa industry is ever-changing. “Evolve” was the theme for this year’s International Spa Association (iSpa) conference and expo. And the industry is evolving, morphing into an open-arms state of mind where radically new treatments are being added, interior spaces reconfigured, and the atmosphere becoming even more embracing and welcoming than ever before.

Here are three things I came home with (in addition to bags of new products you’ll learn about in the coming weeks):

Spa People are Hospitality People

If you want something planned well, where guests — or attendees — feel welcomed, pampered, and relaxed, ask someone in the spa industry to help you plan your event.  At ISPA, every detail was oriented toward making the attendee feel appreciated and comfortable. It was like being at a spa, and it was obvious that the show management team operated from a spa mentality.

Registration was quick and easy (with very friendly people making you feel welcome). The gift bag was nothing short of luxurious with full-size products from numerous high-end companies. There were places to sit with tables for sorting, texting, and writing, and couches for lounging and relaxing.

Water was available everywhere — not just tucked back into a corner. Plus, healthy sit-down lunches were provided (Lunch? Who provides lunch?) and every afternoon a trolley was pushed through the trade show floor laden with cookies and brownies, all for the taking. I have attended hundreds of conferences and trade shows, and have been to only one other where snacks were provided and that was put on by event planners, another group that knows the true meaning of hospitality!

Amethyst, Rose Quartz, and Other Gems

Gemstones, often found in spa gift stores, are making their way into the treatment rooms. There is a whole new meaning to the concept of hot-stone massage! Rose quartz and amethyst wands are being used in massages and can be found in facial rollers along with jade. You’ll be seeing more gemstone-infused skin care products. Plus, don’t be surprised if your next spa treatment includes an amethyst-lined, heated pad that you lie on, reaping the soothing benefits of the stones.

There were several booths with gemstone jewelry — all very dainty and feminine. Vitajuwel had a booth with its jewel pod water bottles, beverage dispensers, and beautiful gemstone vials. This company has been around for many years and keeps coming out with interesting new products (check out their gemstone vials). And one booth was just selling rocks — gemstones that could be used for chakra-balancing and as enhancements to other treatments.

And The Stories People Told…

Product. People normally talk about their products. What makes them different, how they are the answer to all of one’s problems, why they’re better than all other products out there. Not so this show. I was told stories.

I was told the backstories of many of the companies whose booths I visited. People talked about the history of company founders. I heard of companies’ commitment to the environment, ending sex trafficking, and providing shelters for abandoned horses and goats. For example, I was told at one of the booths, that their kombucha “likes to be cozy” and is therefore produced in small batches. I left feeling like I “knew” many of the companies and because of that, feel more inclined to use their products. Look for some of these company’s stories in the weeks to come.

Take a Peek at Three Products I Tested

Eye “Patches” Aren’t Just for Pirates
Some days we look and feel like our eyes are drooping down to our chin. Maybe it was a late night, a sad movie, allergies — no matter. It’s not nice to scare small children! Patchology to the rescue. Perhaps you’ve already tried some of the under eye strips that magically erase puffy skin. They’re great aren’t they?  Now try Patchology’s sheet masks for the whole face and lips. Cheapest facelift you’ll ever have!

Tense no More

I have been working on a huge project that took my complete attention for almost two weeks. The success of a huge fundraiser was resting almost completely on my shoulders (my hunched up, tense, touching-my-ears shoulders). There, sitting on my table was a stress relief roller ball applicator by TARA Living Wellness. I picked it up, rolled it on my wrists and at the base of my throat, only to realize a few moments later that I wasn’t as tense. And the fragrance was soothing with a touch of pick-me-up. For the next two weeks, I continued to use the roller ball and definitely feel like it helped me make it through the crunch.

Tara Living Wellness has six “solutions” to common concerns from stress to balance. The solution lines contain a number of at-home treatment options infused with essential oils and botanicals, including bath salts, shower gels, and roller balls. It also has an Ayurvedic line addressing the different personalities of the doshas: pitta, vata and kapha.

I met the founder and president of TARA Spa Therapy, Inc., Tara Grodjesk in her booth at iSPA. Although a busy executive running a growing company, she continues to maintain her massage practice so she can, “stay in touch with that side of the industry.” She is committed to helping people understand and take responsibility for their own well being. Her website mirror this philosophy with an in-depth primer on Ayurvedic principles and detailed information on  aromatherapy.

Bubbles in the Shower

I was given a wonderful soap-infused sponge at the Spongellé booth. It smelled like papaya and the suds were rich and, well, sudsy. I’m two weeks into using the sponge and it still has plenty of lather. Just think! This is the perfect thing to throw in your bag when traveling (no more tiny bars of soap). Plus, it’s great for a guest bathroom for overnight guests. It’s a fun present they’ll take home and continue to enjoy. The company’s website features sponges and other items with many fragrances, shapes and colors. Functional and fun!

Moon Notes

Today’s moon is 32% full and the phase is waxing crescent. The full moon will be Sunday, October 13.

Source Alert

Clinique has wonderfully packaged holidays gift sets already in stores (Nordstrom, Dillard’s, and Ulta). I have three sparkly eye and cheek pallets(box at right in photo) and 15 (yes 15) items for the lips that came in the snowflake package. Prices were reasonable too — $29.50 and $49.50 for over $140 worth of product in each package.

I know of a cure for everything: saltwater… sweat, or tears, or the salt sea.

So Many Topics, So Little Time

Starting a Dialogue—This blog already has a life of its own. I chase one story only to come up with five others. I literally have hundreds of ideas for posts and the list grows every day. Since this is a lifestyle blog, the possibilities are endless. Here is just a tiny sample of my “formal” list that is broken down into specific areas:

  • Bathroom
    • Create Your Own Spa-like Bathroom! Here’s How
    • Change the Lighting, Change the Mood
    • Create a Spa-like Countertop
  • Beginner’s guide
    • Never Been To a Spa? We’re Going To Change That!
    • Choosing the Facial that is Right for You
    • What Kind of Massage Do You Want?
    • A Scrub? Do I Really Need a Scrub?
    • What is a Wrap Supposed to Accomplish Anyway?
    • Service Charges, Tips, Resort Fees — What is All of this About?
    • Your Spa Voice
    • Five Surprising Items I Always Have in My Spa Tote
  • Books
    • Five Hot and Steamy Reads for Summer
    • Five Books You’ll Want on Your Coffee Table
    • A Spa-based Mystery — Hot Tub Anyone?
    • The Spa Philosophy — Three Books You’ll Want to Ponder
    • Pack Your Bags — There’s Spas to Visit!

Now, when you remember that many of the items in the list can have multiple sub-topics, you see where this is going. But in spite of all of my ideas, I still want to know what you would like to hear about. What are your suggestions for post topics. Are you interested in trending treatments? Do you want interviews with cosmetic developers? Do you have a spa experience you’d like to share (guest blogger)? Just let me know!

Also, I want this to be an interactive in-person experience. Are you interested in meetups? Do you want classes (in flower arranging, crafts, DYI creams and masks)? What about spa parties? All of these are possible.

You may even be a professional in the industry — an aesthetician, stylist, nail artist, or others — who wants to occasionally share hot tips with Steamy Side Readers. I also hope to connect with people to interview in relation to specific topics.

Something else, is the sharing of ideas. I have to admit, I very seldom comment on even a Facebook post. But I do comment if I feel like I have something of value to add. I hope you know that your comments are valued and valuable. I look forward to hearing from you — together we can make The Steamy Side of Vegas really fun!

A Commitment to Ethics

Trying to Do it Right—There is much more to doing a blog than writing and taking pictures.  There are ethical decisions to be made regarding sponsors, reader comments, comped services and products, and reviews, among other things.

For example, any time I post an actual review of a spa, and give it a Towel Rating and designate whether it is a Yogini or Martini space, I will pay for my services at the spa (using my locals discount of course) and will go as anonymously as possible. I don’t want there to ever be questions as to whose opinions are being printed.

Eventually I hope to have many, many readers for this blog — not only because I want as many people as possible to be exposed to the information, but because I also hope to have sponsors who want to purchase ad space (all current advertisers are my friends and have been given complementary ads). So, in light of the above commitment, no spa, product manufacturer or service provider will be officially reviewed while they are sponsors of On the Steamy Side (or OSS as I fondly think of it).

Another commitment is to always talk from personal experience if possible. One of the future posts I’m working on covers far infared therapy. That post will be written from personal experience and will include interviews with technicians offering the service, and interviews with one or more physicians as to the safety and effectiveness of the treatment. However, there are many things I need to include  because they’re of current interest, that I”m probably not going to want to experience personally — perhaps microdermabrasion, cosmetic surgery, eyelash extensions, or permanent makeup among them. However, that doesn’t mean I can’t find people to interview (or that I won’t change my mind!).

In relation to comped products or services — I will always let you know if a product or service was given to me when it is mentioned in a post.

As to comments for each post. I want this to be an interactive experience and I encourage everyone to share their ideas, experiences and opinions. I am not thin-skinned and look at all personal criticism as an opportunity to grow, learn, and change. However, each comment will be moderated before it becomes public. Those comments will only be deleted based on bad language or any unkindness toward anyone.

When you sign up for my blog, in my world, you are entering in to an important agreement. You agree to receive an announcement of each post; I agree to write posts and send you notices AND I agree to not share your information with anyone. That doesn’t mean there won’t be advertising on the website (as mentioned above),  possibly in an email, but no one will be using my contact list but me.

One must have a framework for working within. I will eventually be adding to these commitments as new questions of ethical proportions arise.

The source of all abundance is not outside you. It is part of who you are.

A Quick Note On Dressing

Making the Perfect Salad Dressing (for the bath)—What’s in the perfect salad dressing? Many would salt, vinegar, herbs of some sort, and oil.

One Sunday morning, there were several things I wanted to accomplish with my bath besides the obvious. I wanted to refresh my skin and hair and I didn’t want to come out all dry and pruney.  Plus, I was feeling a bit negative and wanted to wash all of that negativity down the drain.

Reading, shaving, soaking — I planned to be in there awhile.

The Salt

First, I added a cup of coarse-ground Himalayan sea salt to warm/hot running water. Sea salt does a number of things… it helps balance and tone the skin, it can be used as a body scrub — sloughing off dead skin, and metaphysically it is used to help eliminate negative energy. I buy my sea salt in the food sections of stores like TJ Maxx, Marshalls, or Home Goods. In these stores, you can buy a pound or more for about $3.50, whereas at a health food store, that same pound could easily cost up to $9 or $10 with sea salt running at about $ .55 an ounce.

The Vinegar

Second, two cups of apple cider vinegar were added to the water. Vinegar is truly amazing, and it will be mentioned in many posts to come (as will sea salt). Vinegar helps balance the pH levels of skin, plus it can unclog pores, fight acne, help smooth wrinkles, and calm red skin. It is good for you internally also, but that is a separate post. Always be sure to buy apple cider vinegar with “the mother.” It is this dingy cloud at the bottom of the bottle that contains the enzymes and trace minerals that makes it so effective (remember to shake the container to get a good mix).

The Herb of Some Sort

Third, I tossed in several sprigs of rosemary from the garden, running them through my fingers several times to release the oils and accompanying fragrance. Rosemary is a very stimulating herb whose fragrance will wake you up and help you stay alert. I use it in the car for long trips. You can place several drops of rosemary essential oil on a cotton ball and put that in a small bottle with a tight lid. That way the driver can use it as a “sniffer” and everyone else in the car can still nap and relax (you can give them lavender “sniffers” to help them chill).

I’ll share a quick story here — its thanks to rosemary that I really started to believe in — and understand — the incredible powers of essential oils. It was more than 40 years ago, and I had just started to learn about and use aromatherapy. It was fairly late evening and I took a wonderfully hot bath with a few drops of rosemary oil thrown in. Now, you don’t know me yet, I’m an early to bed kind of person, but I got out of that tub ready to accomplish something. I was up till after midnight, sweeping, putting away clothes, dusting (all totally out of character). My suggestion is that you only use rosemary in the bath in the morning — definitely not at night.

The Oil

So all bath projects completed, I then added about an eighth of a cup of safflower oil. I add the oil at the end of my bath, even after washing off, because I wanted the oil to trap the moisture on my skin so it leaves me feeling soft and smooth.  Also, I have a Jacuzzi tub, and I’m very careful what I pump through the system — no bubble bath, no oils.   It stays much cleaner this way!

So after I got out of the tub, I realized the bath ingredients were worthy of a salad.

Tossing it All Together

In light of that I want you to remember the famous words from Pretty Woman. You may recall that Vivian wanted Edward to hang out and probably get cuddly and he went downstairs to play the piano (crazy man):

Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts): Let’s watch old movies all night… we’ll just veg out in front of the TV.
Edward Lewis (Richard Gere): Veg out?
Vivian: Yeah. Be still like vegetables. Lay like broccoli.
Edward Lewis: Look, I’ll tell ya what. I’ll be back. We’ll do broccoli tomorrow.

I’m asking you to put yourself in Vivian’s shoes and pretend to be the salad vegetable of your choice, because soon you will be immersing yourself in the perfect dressing in your bathtub. I hope you have fun with the salad bath theme and pretend to be a head of romaine or a stalk of celery.

And what can you add? Perhaps cucumbers for your eyes? A different herb — thyme for example or even the spice turmeric (although you may come out a bit yellow). Sliced tomatoes on your face as a mask (yes they’re good for you)? Oh avocado! I just thought of avocado with its magnificent oils that are good for face and hair! You might want to use avocado.

Change up the oil, add Epsom salts… let me know your recipe for bath salad dressing!

Take a Walk on the Steamy Side

Living the Spa LifeMy First Post—Writing your first blog post is like being alone in a chat room (it’s sorta weird). But there are so many things I can’t wait to share with you…

Spas are water and bubbles and parties and laughter. Spas are beauty and tanning and makeovers and comfy robes. Spas are yoga and healthful eating and solitary reflection; treatments and exercise and healing.  Spas give us a space for beauty, peace and wellness.

“Living the Spa Life” is about embracing all of these things in your day-to-day, creating a balance among all of the areas of your life. It is about living full out. To me, it is about living what I call a “curated life.” I want you to have a life that is rich with meaning, color, texture, smells, joy, healthy food, and happiness.

It is about learning to make choices that bring you joy. A curated life is simply a result of being mindful of your choices. Clothes. Friends. Spending money. Travel. Work. Creative pursuits. Drink. Décor. Rituals. Sleeping/waking (even dreaming).

Living the Spa Life

So many people have urged me to write about my experiences and what I’ve learned from visiting spas — how to create quiet sacred spaces in my home; how to surround myself with beauty; how to make choices about the world I live in. I will share this and more as we move through this journey.

This blog has been more than six years in the making. I woke up one morning with the idea (and name) for “The Steamy Side of Vegas, Living the Spa Life” in my head. That was 2013. Then came a lot of living, and moving, and growing, and loving. And now, I’m ready to do this!

We’ll celebrate holidays together, make homemade beauty treatments, and even travel. You’ll find reviews of spas in Las Vegas and around the world as I travel and explore new places. We’ll look at products and what’s hot in skin care, makeup and nails. There will be guest writers, videos and interviews. We’ll have meetups throughout the year at various locations and other opportunities to get together to celebrate the spa life.

There’s so much to explore: Perfume! Textures! Home decor! Beauty treatments! Aromatherapy! Books! Scarves! Sunglasses! Elephants? (well maybe).  I’m excited about finally getting started!

Living the Spa Life

Let’s walk on the steamy side!

One’s destination is never a place, but rather a new way of looking at things.
